Simple ways to deal with Stress and Anxiety

The moment we understand that our bodies naturally experience stress to keep us safe, we can start to become more accepting. Stress and anxiety are feelings that we all experience and we need to collectively work towards a change in mindset about learning to understand the causes of these anxious feelings.

1. Don’t eat too much and eat the right things

Our body uses up a lot of energy on digesting certain foods, so be mindful and stop eating when you are starting to feel full. A Japanese saying ‘hara hachi bu’ is a teaching of only eating till you 80% full

You can also focus on eating foods like:

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Seeds and Nuts
  • Dark chocolate
  • Lots of water

2. Meditate

Meditation doesn’t mean you have to sit cross-legged with your eyes closed for half an hour. You can practice mindfulness in your day and start to relate parts of your daily routine. For example, brushing your hair can be a really relaxing thing and if you allow yourself to focus on being in that moment while you do it, then this is one way you can have a short meditation in your routine. 3. Understand your triggers

Once you start to become aware of what causes your body to trigger the stressful feeling, you can focus on resolving those concerns and learning how to accept them.

4. Prevention is key

This is the simplest but also the hardest thing to do! We need to focus on creating habits to keep things on track and stop us from feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Learning how to stop procrastinating is important to stay on track and avoid unnecessary stress, read more about it here.

5. Relaxation routine

Whenever you do feel like you are overwhelmed or anxious, a good way to cope is to have a routine that will help you focus on staying calm and in control. Try creating a ‘self-care box‘ that will have all the things that make you feel good like your journal, a favourite candle and some essential oils and a face mask. You can also remind yourself to just watch something funny to help take your mind off the unwanted things until you are ready to deal with it.
